Discover Pouso Alegre Lodge
Every year, photographers, naturalists, and nature lovers from around the world stay at Pouso Alegre Lodge to enjoy the wonders of the Pantanal in an authentic farm environment and immersion in the Pantaneiro lifestyle. Nestled along the legendary Transpantaneira Highway, Pouso Alegre Lodge is your perfect retreat into the heart of the Pantanal, one of the world’s most spectacular wildlife sanctuaries. Known for its authentic charm, rich biodiversity, and unparalleled wildlife encounters, this eco-lodge offers an unforgettable experience for nature lovers, birdwatchers, and photographers alike.
The Farm
There are records that in the 1920s, the place where the lodge is situated today was known as 'Retiro do Alegre', where the farmhouse was built in 1963 after the great Fazenda Rio Claro was divided, when Luiz Vicente da Silva Campos, born in 1929, received the area of his father and, in the 90s, turned it into the Pouso Alegre Lodge, which the family still manages. Occupying an area of 8000 hectares that covers various physiognomies of the Pantanal vegetation, the farm where the Pouso Alegre Lodge is located is privileged with an abundant population of mammals, like tapirs, anteaters, and deer, among many others, besides hundreds of species of birds, due to its perfect state of preservation, using ancient cattle ways as base for the current trails of access to this priceless natural collection. Several hundred wild horses have roamed the property since it was a working farm. For several years, the property functioned only as a lodge and game sanctuary; however, in the last few years, several hundred heads of cattle from a neighboring farm have been allowed to graze on the property in part to reduce the severity of any fires.

Activities at Pouso Alegre Lodge
The best way to visit Pouso Alegre Lodge is to contract a tour package with an experienced naturalist guide. There are several elevated trails with boardwalks that are accessible all year long, as well as a 30-meter observation tower designed by the same engineer who created the towers for Cristalino Jungle Lodge in the Amazon Rainforest. An extensive system of unmarked woodland trails and a seven-kilometer access road is excellent for overland safaris and nocturnal spotlighting. Additional internal roads on the property allow for more extensive safaris but are accessible only during the dry season. There are several strategically located watering holes, some with game hides where, during the dry season, all the mammals and avifauna must come for water.
For those who insist on going it alone, the ranch has a safari car that can be contracted privately with advance notice for diurnal use or for nocturnal spotlighting, and you can contract one of their local Portuguese-speaking woodsmen with advance notice to guide you on the trails. We recommend a stay of one or two nights at Pouso Alegre that can be combined in your package with other lodges in Porto Jofre or boat trips at other lodges along the Transpantaneira.
